Products Description of Acetylacetone CAS#123-54-6
Acetylacetone is a clear liquid that's colorless or just slightly yellow, with a strong, unpleasant odor. It melts at -23°C, boils at 140.4°C, has a refractive index (n²⁰D) of 1.4520, and a relative density of 0.975.
It mixes well with organic solvents like ethanol, ether, chloroform, acetone, and glacial acetic acid, and it can also dissolve in water. Just be careful—it's both flammable and corrosive.

Product Application of Acetylacetone CAS#123-54-6
Acetylacetone is a key player in organic synthesis. For instance, it reacts with guanidine to make amino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine, and it's also an important starting material for making pharmaceuticals.
Beyond that, it's used as a solvent for cellulose acetate, an additive in gas and lubricants, a drying agent in paints and varnishes, and even as a fungicide and insecticide. It also pulls double duty as a catalyst in petroleum cracking, hydrogenation, and carbonylation reactions, and can be used as an oxidation promoter.
Other uses include removing metal oxides from porous solids and treating polypropylene catalysts. In Europe and the US, more than half of all acetylacetone goes into things like anti-diarrhea medicines and feed additives for livestock.
