Large-grain industrial salt, also known as coarse salt, refers to sodium chloride crystals with a typical particle size range of 2–8 mm. It features high solubility in water, natural deliquescence in humid air, and stable chemical properties, making it a versatile raw material widely adopted across industrial, municipal, and commercial sectors.

Case 1: Road De-Icing in Northern China Municipal Winter Operations
In the severe winter of 2024, the municipal traffic authority in a northern Chinese city deployed large-grain industrial salt on over 1,200 kilometers of urban roads and airport access routes. Compared with fine-grained salt, its larger crystals extended the ice-melting duration by more than 40% while reducing scattering loss during spreading. The material effectively lowered the freezing point of snow and ice, ensuring unobstructed traffic flow even under continuous low-temperature conditions.
Case 2: Ion Exchange Regeneration for Thermal Power Plant Boiler Water Treatment
A 2×660 MW coal-fired thermal power plant in East China selected large-grain industrial salt as the regenerant for its water softening system. The uniform 3–6 mm grain size ensured stable packing in the ion exchange resin tank, avoiding bed compaction and uneven brine distribution. After regeneration, the system efficiently removed calcium and magnesium ions from boiler feed water, significantly reducing scaling risk on heating surfaces and extending the service life of the resin.
Case 3: Drilling Fluid Stabilizer for Offshore Oil & Gas Operations
On an offshore drilling platform in the South China Sea, large-grain industrial salt was added to the drilling mud as a density regulator and stabilizer. It helped maintain the integrity of salt formation cores during drilling, prevented wellbore collapse, and improved the operational safety of high-salinity geological sections. Its low impurity content also minimized interference with other drilling fluid additives.
Case 4: Cement Grinding Aid & Early-Strength Additive in Building Materials Industry
A large cement production base in South China incorporated properly proportioned large-grain industrial salt into its cement grinding process. The salt acted as an effective grinding aid to reduce electrostatic agglomeration between particles, improving grinding efficiency. It also regulated the cement setting time and enhanced early strength development, delivering stable performance for commercial concrete used in infrastructure projects.
Case 5: Foundry Binder for Non-Ferrous Metal Casting
In a large non-ferrous alloy foundry, large-grain industrial salt was used as an excellent binder for molding sand. At high casting temperatures, the salt softened the core sand gradually, effectively preventing thermal cracking of the castings. Compared with organic binders, it generated far fewer harmful emissions during high-temperature treatment, making the process more environmentally friendly and compliant with modern industrial emission standards.
