Products Description of K-CATALYST CAS#1318-93-0
Montmorillonite, also referred to as microcrystalline kaolinite or collinite, is an aluminosilicate mineral mainly composed of octahedral montmorillonite particles. It was named after its initial discovery site in Montmorillon, France. As a soft phyllosilicate mineral, it forms microscopic clay crystals via precipitation from aqueous solutions.
Montmorillonite belongs to the montmorillonite mineral group and is categorized as a 2:1 layered clay, characterized by two tetrahedral silica sheets enclosing a central octahedral alumina sheet. Its particles display a plate like morphology, with an average diameter of about 1 μm and a thickness of approximately 0.96 nm. Owing to their extremely small dimensions, individual clay particles can only be observed under an electron microscope at magnifications around 25,000×. Other minerals in this group include soapstone.
